Somewhere on your property right now there’s a battery on wheels doing absolutely nothing. Maybe it’s the golf cart in the garage, the caravan waiting for December, or the 4×4 with the canopy that only earns its keep two weekends a month. At BPI we looked at all that parked capital and asked a simple engineering question: why is none of it helping when the power goes out?
The BPI GridRover system is our answer — and it’s no longer just for golf carts.
One system, three homes for it
The GridRover started life as a solar-charged golf cart conversion: a LiFePO4 lithium bank storing 5kWh, 9kWh or 16kWh under the seat, a pure sine wave inverter delivering 1600W to 3000W continuous, and a solar canopy overhead so the vehicle charges itself whenever it’s in the sun.
But the system is the product, not the cart. The same engineered package can be built into:
- A converted golf cart — Yamaha, Club Car, EZ-GO or a custom base. Estate transport by day, home backup by night.
- Your caravan — the battery bank you tow to the campsite becomes the battery bank that runs your house the other eleven months of the year.
- A 4×4 canopy — overlanding power for the trips, household storage between them.
Whatever it’s mounted in, it does the same job: silent, solar-charged lithium storage that isn’t bolted to a wall.
The part that matters: it plugs into your home
Plenty of vehicles have batteries. What makes the GridRover system different is Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) AC-coupling — a weatherproof socket and integration circuit that lets the parked vehicle feed your household circuits through your distribution board.
Already have rooftop solar and a wall battery? The GridRover AC-couples alongside them, adding up to 16kWh of extra storage to your existing system — storage you can also drive away with. Don’t have solar yet? The system works as standalone backup: when the grid drops, the vehicle in your garage quietly picks up the essentials. No petrol, no fumes, no generator drone over the braai.
Under the bonnet — or the seat — a multi-stage battery management system handles the charging discipline (bulk, absorption, float) that gives LiFePO4 cells their famously long service life. It’s the same engineering-first approach we bring to every BPI project, from mining skid chargers to silent game viewers.
Peace of mind, twice over
The first kind of peace of mind is the obvious one: the lights stay on, the fridge stays cold, the Wi-Fi stays up, whether it’s loadshedding, cable theft or a substation having a bad week.
The second kind is financial. A golf cart, caravan or overlanding rig is usually a pure expense — insured, serviced, and idle. With a GridRover system inside it, that same asset becomes working infrastructure: it stores free solar energy every day and stands ready every night. Put a number on it: at a levelised solar cost of around R3/kWh, a fully charged GridRover is holding R15, R27 or R48 worth of energy — banked from the sun, every single day. You’re not buying another toy; you’re upgrading one you already own into part of your home’s energy system.
